How to play on a PS1 emulator
Set up DuckStation on Windows, Mac or Android, or Gamma on iPhone, and start the mod. Any PS1 emulator works.
The mod is a regular PlayStation 1 disc image, so it runs in any PS1 emulator. This guide uses DuckStation on Windows, Mac and Android, because it is accurate, free and easy to set up. DuckStation has no iPhone or iPad version, so the iOS steps use Gamma instead.
What you need
- The mod. Download your language's edition from the project page, which always has the latest version.
- Unzip it. Inside is the game's disc image. If there is a
.cuefile, open that one; otherwise open the.binor.iso. - A PS1 BIOS file. DuckStation needs one to start games.
Windows
- Download DuckStation from its official site, duckstation.org, or the GitHub releases page. It needs Windows 10 or 11.
- Open it. The setup wizard asks where your BIOS file is: choose the folder that holds it.
- Add the folder with the unzipped mod as a game folder, then double-click the game. You can also use System → Start File and pick the
.cueor.isodirectly.
Mac
- Download the macOS build from duckstation.org or the GitHub releases page. It runs on Intel and Apple Silicon Macs with macOS 13.3 or newer.
- Unzip it and move DuckStation to your Applications folder.
- DuckStation is not signed by Apple, so macOS blocks the first launch. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down and click Open Anyway.
- Follow the setup wizard to choose your BIOS folder, then add the mod's folder and open the game, the same as on Windows.
Android
- Install DuckStation from the Google Play Store.
- Open it and point it to your BIOS file, either in the first-launch setup or under Settings → BIOS. Then add the folder with the unzipped mod as a game folder.
- Tap the game to start it. On-screen buttons appear automatically, and a Bluetooth controller works too.
iPhone and iPad
DuckStation is not available on iOS, so use Gamma, a free PS1 emulator on the App Store. It shows ads, which an in-app purchase removes.
- Install Gamma from the App Store.
- Save the mod's zip file to the Files app, then import it in Gamma with the + button. Gamma opens zip files directly.
- Tap the game to play. Many games run without a BIOS in Gamma; if the mod doesn't start, import your BIOS file in Gamma's settings.
Any other PS1 emulator
DuckStation and Gamma are only examples. RetroArch (with a PS1 core such as Beetle PSX, SwanStation or PCSX ReARMed), ePSXe and other PlayStation 1 emulators work the same way:
- Open the mod's disc image, the
.cuefile when there is one. - Save with the game's own diary on a memory card.
- Don't load a save state made in an older version of the mod. Save states copy the whole old game, so new features won't be there.
Before your first save
Read Before you play first. It explains why you should back up your memory card and why the mod's saves only go forward.
Enjoying the mod? Treat the cat to a coffee. Amounts are never shown.
